Khlong San / คลองสาน

Khlong San is an area in Bangkok across the river from more popular tourist areas.

My wife, who is Thai, and I stayed at the Millennium Hilton a couple of times. The hotel is on Charoen Nakhon, in Khlong Ton Sai, on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya. The room was on a high floor, overlooking the river, with the city spread out beyond.

The hotel runs a boat from its pier. It took us downriver a short way to Sathorn Pier, by Saphan Taksin. A different boat, a river taxi for a small fee, crossed the river straight over. From that side we took a taxi to Khao San Road.

Next door to the hotel, on the riverside, is a restaurant called Be My Guest. You can walk in from the riverside. We ate tom yum goong and larb moo, sitting outside under cover while a light rain came down, and watched the dinner cruise boats pass.

Flow is the hotel restaurant on the ground floor, also on the river. We had the breakfast buffet each morning. There was plenty of food, and more than one cuisine. The executive lounge is on the third floor, over the river, and we visited it a few times for an evening cocktail. On our first stay at this hotel, we went up to ThreeSixty Rooftop Bar. The atmosphere and view were really great. The hotel has other restaurants and bars we didn't visit.

The area around the hotel is clean and well-kept. ICONSIAM is the mall a short walk away. It is a modern mall like any other big city: familiar shops, a lot of restaurants, and busy. We ate at Bar-B-Q Plaza. We had moo kata, Thai barbecue you cook at the table. The restaurant has a green dinosaur mascot, and it feels a little child-themed, but the food was good.

Across the street is Thai Garden Massage. We went every day for a 60-90 minute foot massage.

Back to Bangkok.
